Troubling problem of an arena at Gateway
The residents' association chairman who seems to
favour Stanhope and Schroder's proposals for redevelopment of the Gateway
site appears to have overlooked that this scheme also now looks set to
include an arena.
Many of the issues that trouble Mr Collins about the Arrowcroft plan would
therefore be equally applicable to the alternative proposal. Mr Collins
is right, however, when he anticipates that his concerns will be addressed
at the UDP inquiry. Clearly, this will scrutinise the important considerations
on traffic and the environment and I would expect that all his questions
will be satisfactorily answered in what is, without doubt, the most appropriate
forum for dealing with such issues.
In the meantime, I can assure Mr Collins that the council remains committed
to the early, comprehensive development of the Gateway site in a fitting
manner that will bring jobs, homes and leisure facilities for Croydon
residents.
